The mountain never
owes you a thing

Practical warnings — weather, roads, snakes, and water — for the country you’re about to fish.

Weather

The montane character of the Highlands means the weather must never be underestimated. All four seasons can occur in a single day. Summer thunderstorms create flash floods capable of trapping anglers on the wrong side of rivers in gorge sections. Sudden snowstorms can create life-threatening situations at altitude.

Always consult with locals before heading into the mountains. Essential kit: warm clothing, rain gear, sun protection (altitude and sky clarity intensify UV exposure). Temperatures up to 36°C have been recorded in summer; winter temperatures have fallen below -15°C.

Roads

Roads are gravel, narrow, and winding. When wet they become treacherous. Drive slowly and keep left — blind rises, corners, and livestock appear without warning.

Snakes

Poisonous snakes found in the region include:

  • Common Puff-adder (Bitis arietans) – generally in lower valleys
  • Rinkhals / Ring-necked Spitting Cobra (Hemachatus haemachatus) – up to 2,500m altitude
  • Cape Cobra / Bakkop (Naja nivea) – up to 2,500m altitude
  • Mountain / Berg Adder (Bitis atropos) – up to 2,500m altitude

Avoid heavily grassed areas and dense riverside vegetation, particularly where you cannot see where you are placing your feet. Consider wearing snake gaiters, especially in summer months.

Drinking Water

A municipal water purification plant was commissioned in Rhodes in December 2004. The water is of good quality. All farms in the area have good fountain water.
