The turnoff to Elliot intersects the R393 at what is locally referred to as Aartappelhoogte, a T-junction between the Birkhall and Branksome farmsteads. Turn right to Moshesh’s Ford or left to travel to Elliot. This “shortcut” should be avoided in rainy weather.
The R393 meets the R58 at the Mountain Shadows Hotel located close to the top of the Barkly Pass that winds down the escarpment emerging near Elliot. This pass is indeed a scenic feast for the eye.
